چکیده

One of the three major goals of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is to improve the quality of radiation models under clear sky, homogeneous cloud, and broken cloud conditions. This report is concerned with the development of the theory of radiation transfer in the broken clouds. Our approach is based on a stochastic description of the interaction between the radiation and cloud field with stochastic geometry; the main results are presented in Titov (1990, 1993). In the following, we discuss

Computation of the Effects of Inhomogeneous Clouds on Retrieval of Remotely Sensed Properties

Current and future earth observation programs depend on satellite measurements of radiance to retrieve the properties of clouds on a global basis. At present, this retrieval is made assuming that the clouds in the instrument field of view are plane parallel and independent of adjacent pixels. While this assumption is known to be false except in very limited cases, its impact can be evaluated, a...

Influence of Ice Particle Shape on Albedo and Transmittance of Ice-Crystal Clouds

Numerous experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the single-scattering properties of nonspherical ice cloud particles can differ substantially from those of surfaceor volume-equivalent spheres (e.g., Volkovitskiy et al. 1984; Takano and Liou 1989). These differences affect the relationship between ice cloud microphysical properties and cloud radiative properties and, consequently, th...

Testing the Probability of Clear Line of Sight Models with ARM Observations

Clouds play a major role in regulating Earth’s climate. However, computer models of Earth’s climate neglect the effects of cloud vertical extend in a broken cloud field. The vertical extent allows clouds to shade more of the atmosphere and allow radiative exchange over a larger temperature range. One way to parameterize this 3D cloud effect is to relate the various cloud properties, including t...

How small is a small cloud?

The interplay between clouds and aerosols and their contribution to the radiation budget is one of the largest uncertainties of climate change. Most work to date has separated cloudy and cloud-free areas in order to evaluate the individual radiative forcing of aerosols, clouds, and aerosol effects on clouds. Here we examine the size distribution and the optical properties of small, sparse cumul...

Cloud – vegetation interaction: use of Normalized Difference Cloud Index for estimation of cloud optical thickness

A new technique to retrieve cloud optical depth for broken clouds above green vegetation using ground-based zenith radiance measurements is developed. By analogy with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalized Difference Cloud Index (NDCI) is defined as a ratio between the difference and the sum of two zenith radiances measured for two narrow spectral bands in the visible...
